Our commitment to the German School Nairobi

We reap what we sow – shaping the future together

For one year, MOIN financially supported the German School Nairobi and this contribution "harvested" a greenhouse, organic seeds and new garden tools. This makes us very happy and so do the kind words on the school’s website:

"Thank you - The organic bakery MOIN

We say 365 times thank you - The organic bakery MOIN supported our school garden for one year. How time flies. In turbulent times, we especially realize how important it is to say thank you. Today we say thank you to Hans-Paul Mattke and the whole MOIN team in Glückstadt.

Thanks to this support, we were finally able to build our longed-for greenhouse, order new organic seeds from Germany and get some new gardening tools. We had just organized everything and then Corona came on the scene. We hope that this turbulent time will soon be over and we can resume our school gardening activities. The participants of the gardening club, the primary school classes, some teachers of the senior classes and of course the kitchen team can hardly wait. We say many, many thanks and send kind regards to Germany, Glückstadt".

In August 2019 the greenhouse was still a future dream.

The vision was for the school to grow their own wheat to be able to make their own bread, pizza and pasta.

A baking club and an apprenticeship as a cook are two of the great projects on offer at the DSN, as well as the production of homemade lemonade with lime, orange, passion fruit and rhubarb flavours. When you consider that there is almost only Coca-Cola and Co. available, the high value of such a project becomes apparent.

Therefore, we would like to thank the DSN's staff for their hard work, the great ideas as well as their implementation. And for the many beautiful photos that DSN chef Florian Kliem shared with us.

Background on Florian Kliem:

We got to know Florian many years ago in the Markthalle Neun in Berlin. Known as Flo Rebel, he cooked in the local canteen Neun, which also offered our croissants. Even back then, Florian's focus was on sustainability. He was in charge of many projects in the field of nutrition and agriculture and has also designed various ecological and regional concepts, e.g. a Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture compaign called „Zu Gut für die Tonne" („too good for the bin“) on the subject of food waste. He also supervised the 2000m² Future Foundation for Agriculture project of the GLS Bank Bochum.

Florian has now been at the German School Nairobi for over two years, leading workshops, training and being responsible for the entire kitchen area.
